2018: Pete Brook, Howard Chapnick Grant Recipient

Pete Brook received the 2018 Howard Chapnick Grant for his proposal to collaborate with incarcerated students to co-author “History 101: Photography In American Prisons,” a course curriculum on images in, and about, carceral sites in the United States.

There is no publicly available curriculum on the history of photography in the prisons of the United States. The curriculum created will be freely available and will be actively distributed to other prison education programs, high schools, colleges, advocacy groups, politicians and other interested parties.

“Through reflexive treatment of imagery, we will bring a prisoner-centric telling to penal and social history. We will reset the departure point for public dialogue on mass incarceration in the United States.”
