1994: Ellen Binder
(Photos coming soon)
Ellen Binder, an American photographer, was awarded the grant to continue her work in Russia. Going there on her own initiative, she began this project in 1991, the last year of the Soviet Union’s existence. Her work examines the ways in which this deeply wounded nation, with an uncertain future, struggles through its post-communist period. She focuses on how the great majority of Russians, overlooked by historical forces, live–how they work, rest and seek escape from the degradation of their daily lives.
