1993: James Nachtwey

(Photos coming soon)

James Nachtwey, an American photojournalist, was awarded the grant to continue his work in South Africa. He documented a period of transition in Spring 1994 when black South Africans were able to vote in a national election for the first time. His work focused on the background to their struggle and the political process leading up to the election. Nachtwey sees this story as one of “spiritual strength and cultural survival in the face of enormous odds.”
